Whilst important discussions will continue at UNEA-5 on the marine litter and microplastics issue, which may include development of a new globally binding legal framework, the Basel Convention offers an important part of the solution to tackling plastic waste pollution. The Plastic Waste Amendments, adopted at the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties in 2019, made the Basel Convention the only legally binding instrument to specifically address plastic waste. In addition to its provisions aimed at controlling the exports and imports of hazardous wastes and wastes generated from households and ensuring their environmentally sound management, the Convention also seeks to tackle the problem at its source through prevention and minimization. This side-event will showcase these efforts.
