These Regulations replace, with amendments, Schedule 2 of the 1994 principal Regulations, containing provisions on the welfare of calves. The Regulations implement Council Directive 91/629/EC, as amended by Council Decree 97/2/EC laying down minimum standards for the protection of calves. The Regulations introduce a binding requirement to keep calves in groups after the age of eight weeks, they prohibit tethering and prescribe the inspection and feeding of calves twice a day.
