The Operational Program for Fisheries is the framework document, prepared by the Ministry of Food and Agricultural Development and approved by the EU Commission, which establishes the strategic guidelines for the development of fisheries in the country, with the financial aid of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF). The overall development aim of the Greek Operational Programme for Fisheries is “the viable and sustainable development of the Fisheries sector whilst reinforcing sector competitiveness and preserving social and economic cohesion”. In order to work towards the achievement of the overall strategy, a number of Strategic Objectives have been defined as follows: S.O.1: to achieve a long term balance between the fisheries resources and the respective fisheries activities; S.O.2.1: to achieve sustainable growth of the aquaculture sector and to improve the market competitiveness of products; S.O.2.2: development and growth of competitive and profitable undertakings in the processing and marketing of fisheries products sector; S.O.3: to improve the business environment required for the growth of the fisheries sector and to strive for the objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy; S.O.4: sustainable development of fisheries areas. The strategic objectives of the Operational Programme are reflected in and are to be attained through the implementation of the following priority axes: Priority Axis 1: measures for the adaptation of the fishing fleet; Priority Axis 2: aquaculture, inland fishing, fisheries and processing and marketing of fisheries products; Priority Axis 3: measures of common interest; Priority Axis 4: sustainable development of fisheries areas. For each Axis a number of Measures (actions) are set forth which are implemented with specific Ministerial Decrees.
