These Regulations implement EP and Council Directive 94/35/EC on sweeteners for use in foodstuffs and Commission Directive 95/31/EC concerning purity of sweeteners. The principal provisions of the Regulations: (a) prohibit the sale of sweeteners other than permitted sweeteners; (b) prohibit the use of sweeteners in or on any food, other than certain foods in which only specified sweeteners may be used; (c) prohibit the use of sweeteners in or on specified food for infants and young children; (d) prohibit the sale of food containing any added sweetener other than a permitted sweetener and the sale of table-top sweeteners other than permitted sweeteners which are correctly labelled.
