The executive body of the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR Convention) has adopted this new Annex which shall be added to the Convention as Annex V. These new provisions concern the protection and conservation of the ecosystems and biological diversity of the maritime area. The Contracting Parties shall, in addition to the obligations already set forth in the Convention, take all necessary measures to (i) protect and conserve the ecosystems and the biological diversity of the maritime area, and restore marine areas which have been adversely affected, as well as (ii) cooperate in adopting programmes and measures for the control of the human activities identified in accordance with the criteria laid down in Appendix 3.
The Council has approved, on behalf of the Community, new Annex V to the OSPAR Convention by enacting Decision 2000/340/EC which is hereby available.
