To reach a common understanding among parties of the definition, interpretation and terminology of wastes covered by the Convention, including the distinction between wastes and non-wastes.

To develop national and regional capacity, particularly through the Basel Convention regional and coordinating centres, by integrating waste management issues into national sustainable development strategies and plans for sustainable livelihood.

To promote cooperation with national, regional and international bodies, in particular cooperation and coordination between the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, to improve environmental and working conditions through the environmentally sound management of hazardous and other wastes.

Parties support sustainable wildlife trade policies, especially those that increase the capacity of Indigenous peoples and local communities to pursue livelihoods.

Parties and the Secretariat support and enhance existing cooperative partnerships in order to achieve their identified objectives.

The importance of achieving CITES’ aim as a contribution to achieving the relevant Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, is recognized.

Parties encourage the formation of new, innovative and mutually sustainable alliances between CITES and relevant international partners, where appropriate to advance CITES’ objective and mainstream conservation and of sustainable use of biodiversity.

Awareness of the role, purpose and achievements of CITES is increased globally.

Cooperation between CITES and international financial mechanisms and other related institutions is enhanced in order to support activities that contribute to CITES implementation and enforcement.

CITES Parties are informed of international actions for sustainable development that may have a bearing on achieving the goal of CITES.

By 2032, provisions that support CMS are included and strengthened in other relevant international instruments, policies and initiatives, and in the strategic priorities of relevant stakeholders for the benefit of migratory species. Explanation: CMS mandates, provisions and priorities are taken into consideration in the decisions and initiatives of other environmental and sustainable development-related international instruments, policies and initiatives, including under the UN (e.g., NBSAPs, NDCs), as well as in relevant stakeholder strategic processes.
