These Regulations have been adopted in implementation of Directive 96/98/EC, which aims at enhancing safety at sea as well as preventing marine pollution by introducing uniform provisions in matter of marine equipment. The Regulations shall apply to equipment for use on board (i) a new Maltese ship, or (ii) an existing Maltese ship. A safety certificate shall not be issued to a Maltese ship unless the equipment on board that ship complies with the requirements hereby prescribed.
