The Ministry of Environment and Food may grant - through the Danish AgriFish Agency - financial support for the preservation of old Danish animal breeds and breeding associations contributing to livestock breed preservation in adherence to EU regulations. These "Livestock subsidies", shall be granted to private individuals or public institutions, which at the time of their applications are preserving old Danish livestock breeds. The AgriFish Agency may approve such applications as part of the coordinated breeding programme for the preservation of these species, with the condition that the beneficiary enters into a five-year cooperation agreement with the Advisory Committee for the Preservation of Danish Animal Genetic Resources (Conservation Committee). Animal species include: equines, cattle, sheep/goats and swine. Animal subsidies may be equivalent for each livestock unit (LU) to an annual maximum of 3 000 DKK for females and 8 000 DKK for males, and must not exceed the additional costs and income associated with the keeping of the endangered breeds.
