These Regulations amend the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 in provisions which make provision with respect to the control on the handling of radioactive substances and the disposal of radioactive waste. The principal objective is to further adjust the provisions of the Act to Council Directive 96/29/Euratom laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionizing radiation. New provisions define the substances and articles which are classified as radioactive material or radioactive waste under the Act, and which are subject to the controls under the Act. A new Schedule 1A (Tables of NORM industrial activities, radionuclides and summation rules) is introduced, Schedule 1 replaced and sections 8(4) and (5) and 15(1) repealed.
