Created in 1999 by the UN General Assembly to enhance cooperation in the field of environment and human settlements within and beyond the UN system. Chaired by the Executive Director of UNEP, the EMG meets periodically. Members are the specialized agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system and the secretariats of multilateral environmental agreements, as well as the Bretton Woods Institutions and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
