Consent to be acquired prior to accessing genetic resources or shipping internationally regulated chemicals, substances or products. Granted by competent authorities on the basis of the information provided by the partners to a prior informed consent agreement. The notion is linked to the principle of the Advanced Informed Agreement. Used in the context of negotiations on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing, as well as on traditional knowledge of local and indigenous communities (see indigenous people). Also used in the context of the PIC Convention.
