نظم إيكولوجية فريدة وهشة بسبب تطور الحياة النباتية والحيوانية فيها في إطار عزلة نسبية. كثير من الجزر النائية بها بعض من أندر الأنواع النباتية في العالم، وبعضها به أنواع من النباتات والحيوانات غير موجودة في أي مكان آخر تطورت بطريقة متخصصة في ظل الحماية من المنافسة الشرسة التي تواجهها الأنواع الأخرى على اليابسة الرئيسية.
