This Regulation sets out the requirements that drinking water must meet in order to protect the human health from the harmful effects of possible drinking water pollution. Drinking water is: water in its original state or after preparation, intended for drinking, cooking, preparing food or for other household purposes, regardless of its origin and whether supplied from the water supply network of the drinking water supply system, tanks or as pre-packaged water; all water used for the production and marketing of foodstuffs (definitions in article 2).
Drinking water is appropriate when: it does not contain micro-organisms, parasites and their developmental forms in numbers which may present a danger to human health; it does not contain substances in concentrations which, alone or together with other substances, may present a danger to human health; it complies with the requirements set out in parts A and B of Annex I, which is part of this publication. Compliance must be ensured: at taps or places where water is used as drinking water; at food production and marketing facilities: at places where water is used in the production and marketing of food; in drinking water packaging facilities. Chapter 2 sets the internal control and monitoring rules; Chapter 3 sets the measures for the removal of causes of non-conformity and limitations of use of drinking water; Chapter 6 is about databases and information.
