A basic piece of legislation to regulate the hygienic conditions in the preparation and handling of fish and fish products destined for human consumption in Austria. However, it does not apply to living mussels. Article 2 contains the definition of certain terms, such as "fish products", "fresh fish products", "prepared fish products", "deep frozen fish products", "products of aquaculture", "means of transport", "import", etc. Entitled persons and managers of producer plants must ensure the implementation of this Ordinance. First of all, they must carry out a control of all products to ensure that hygienic conditions in plants are up to standards. Samples of products must be examined periodically; if it is found that the level of certain bacteria is above the maximum allowed in certain products they may not be marketed. These entitled persons must report to the competent authority in order to obtain a control number. Large producer groups have to be registered. Article 10 governs the marking and labelling of fish products. All products to be sold have to be entered in a register. The Ordinance consists of 13 articles and 4 Annexes: General regulations for producer plants (1); General principles (2); Determination of certain substances in fish products (3).
