The present Act shall protect human beings, animals, plants and their communities and living space, the soil and water, as well as buildings against damages inflicted by major accidents. In case of such accidents the dangers and consequences for human beings, animals and the environment shall be limited to a mere minimum. The text consists of 18 articles divided into 6 Parts as follows: General provisions (I); Precautions (II); Safety measures (III); Managing major accidents (IV); Organization (V); Final provisions (VI).

The present Act is consolidated as of LGBl. 2012, No. 321.The present Act has been amended by the Ordinance of 16 October 2012 on Adaptation of Ordinances concerning the establishment of an Environment Office.
