These Regulations implement Community legislation on the welfare of animals kept for farming purposes such as cattle, pigs, laying hens and chickens for meat production. They provide that owners and keepers of animals kept for farming purposes must take reasonable steps to ensure the welfare of animals in their care and to prevent them any unnecessary pain, suffering or injury and prescribe conditions of the keeping of animals. A person responsible for a farmed animal shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that the conditions under which the farmed animal is bred or kept comply with Schedule 1. The Regulations also define offences and prescribe penalties.
