Principle 1 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development of 1992 states that “Human beings are at the center of concerns for sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature.” In 2009, the UNGA proclaimed 22 April as International Mother Earth Day. In so doing, Member States acknowledged that the Earth and its ecosystems are our common home, and expressed their conviction that it is necessary to promote Harmony with Nature in order to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations. That same year, the UNGA adopted its first resolution on Harmony with Nature. During the fifteenth meeting of the CBD COP, Parties will adopt a post-2020 global biodiversity framework as a stepping stone towards the 2050 vision of “Living in Harmony with Nature.”
