Definition

Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The outcomes of the Conference include: (i) The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); (ii) The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); (iii) Agenda 21; (iv) The establishment of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD); (v) The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; (vi) The Non-Legally Binding Authoritative Statement of Principles for a Global Consensus on the Management, conservation and sustainable development of all Types of Forests (also known as “the Forest Principles”). UNCED also led to the negotiation and adoption of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
