The purpose of this Directive is the approximation of the laws of the Member States on the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment with a view to contributing to the protection of human health and the environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste derived from electrical and electronic equipment. These provisions shall apply to the electrical and electronic equipment falling within the categories mentioned in Annex IA.
